TIPS FOR A WARM WINTER OUTFIT

Winter Outfit

We have been enjoying a snowy winter and sunny winter days are still ahead. February is a great month to enjoy outdoor activities and winter sports, and some have winter holidays to look forward to. During the cold months it is important to pay attention to what you’re wearing so you can enjoy the winter months without feeling cold. The weather conditions, personal preferences and the activities affect the decision on what to wear.

We’ve gathered tips below on how to choose the correct outfit, so you can enjoy the outdoors to the fullest. By layering you can adjust your outfit so you won’t feel too hot or cold.

BASE LAYERS

The base layer is key to a warm feeling during the cold winter. The base layer brings warmth and transfers moisture away from the skin, so you don’t start feeling cold. The best option for outdoor activities is a base layer with a natural material like merino wool which feels dry and warm against the skin. For sports, like cross-country skiing or winter running, we recommend a technical and breathable base layer. In addition to the material, make sure the size of the base layer is correct. If the base layer set is too big the material can’t transfer moisture in the most optimal way.

MID-LAYERS

When the temperature drops below zero, a mid-layer is good to add on top of the base layer. A mid-layer jacket is easy to pack away when not needed. When choosing a mid-layer jacket pay attention to its different uses. A mid-layer jacket can be, for example, a thick fleece jacket, an insulating jacket, a light technical jacket, or a warm and windproof hybrid jacket. We recommend a mid-layer jacket especially for those who feel cold easily.

TOP LAYER

The top layer brings the final touch and protects from wind, rain and cold temperature. When choosing a winter jacket, ask yourself what will you be doing when wearing it? If you’re heading to the ski slopes or sledding down a nearby hill, choose a wind and waterproof jacket, and snow locks are a great additional feature! For an active walk a great option is a lighter jacket and stretchable materials, like down and softshell.

ACCESSORIES

The correct accessories are an important piece of your warm winter outfit. Avoid freezing fingers and ears with gloves or mittens and a warm beanie.

Thick gloves with a waterproof membrane are great for the cold and wet winter conditions. If your fingers get cold easily, try mittens instead of gloves with separate sections for each finger. The gloves or mittens feel warmer if you leave room for movement and you can add a thinner glove under for extra warmth if needed.

A thick beanie with a windproof membrane will keep your head and ears warm on windy and cold winter days.

To keep your feet warm as well, merino wool socks are the best option to combine with winter shoes, they transfer moisture very well and feel warm and dry. A high stem on the socks is important because it will keep the ankle and calf warmer and help the socks stay in place better.

SHOES

For winter shoes we recommend shoes with a higher cut and a waterproof membrane. A warm inner layer is a great additional feature for the coldest days and weather conditions. Grip sole shoes and spike shoes are the right option when the conditions are slippery. Grip sole shoes are great for different conditions and can be used indoors as well. If the streets are slippery or you’re facing an icy surface like on a frozen lake, choose spike shoes for the best grip.
